Honor Guard

The Garland Fire Department Honor Guard was created in the event of losing a firefighter in the line of duty.  The Honor Guard's sole duty is to stand guard over the casket of a fallen brother during times of viewing, before and after a funeral, escort the brother firefighter to their final resting place, perform the flag ceremony before internment and assure the flag is properly presented to the brother's next of kin.  This assures that a fallen firefighter is buried with the honor and dignity deserved of only the nation's bravest heroes.

GFD Honor Guard began with ten personnel who volunteered to undergo countless hours of drill and ceremony practices.  All of the Honor Guard's movements and functions are based on military drills.  The Honor Guard also has a bagpipe player that proceeds on his own in front of the procession.   GFD Honor Guard has performed at funerals of firefighters (active and retired) of other cities as well as Garland.   They have also been called upon to perform as color guard in local parades, civic, and school functions.  Within the past year, six more members have been added to the GFD Honor Guard, to assure constant state of readiness to fulfill the duties out of the utmost respect the members have for the fire service and those who make the ultimate sacrifice.
