Working Together

Ask the question, “Who benefits from vital neighborhoods?” and the list will include a variety of stakeholders – residents, local government, schools, businesses, nonprofits, and many others. Residents seek benefits that will protect home investments, achieve a rich quality of life, and enhance physical conditions of their neighborhoods.  Likewise, local government, businesses, and nonprofits seek opportunities to enhance the quality of services they provide and to accomplish goals that may be part of a shared agenda.

Our Roles

City Services:   What the City can do
The City of Garland works to maintain a complex network of infrastructure to include streets, utilities, recreational facilities and other elements to keep Garland vital.  The City also provides a variety of services designed to further improve the quality of life for both residents and visitors.

Neighborhood Management:  What you can do
Neighborhood management, the effort to develop and sustain a vital neighborhood and influence others to cooperate in the effort is at the core of a healthy neighborhood.  In healthy neighborhoods, neighbors are able to manage the day-to-day concerns that arise.   Building their capacity refers to the skill and degree to which neighbors are willing to act collectively on behalf of their neighborhood.

Our Approach

Neighborhoods Citywide
Achieving the Strategy for Vital Neighborhoods mission of bringing neighborhood stakeholders together in partnership requires an understanding of the assets and needs of neighborhoods and the availability of resources.  Strategic activities within the Program provide two key opportunities to advance our citywide vision as well as the desired vision for each individual neighborhood.

Targeted Neighborhoods
Target Program Areas bring the City and neighbors together to engage in a series of planning, education, and capacity building activities aimed at strengthening the partnership between the City and neighbors by identifying the neighborhood vision, identifying neighborhood assets and needs, and building neighborhood management capacity.  The plan created through this targeted work creates a foundation for internal City investment and program decisions and is a resource for neighbors to use in developing their own action plan to achieve their vision for the future.
